We rock and you know it

Caitlin Cary at the Pour House

Caitlin Cary’s show summed up:  great.  I love her naturalness, the fact that she gets down and looks like, if only her violin was an electric guitar, she would shred the hell out of it because she enjoys the rest of her band so much.  Not that she doesn’t do her fair bit of violin shredding anyways.  This woman is talented.  Everyone in her band is talented.  The whole damn thing is just talented.

Needless to say, the music was great, good accompaniment with pedal steel and dobro.  It takes folk music, singing/songwriting, and gives it dimension, makes it more Americana.  I wish my music were more robust like that.  Favorite moments…well let me just say something on the side…I really appreciate that the band brings up friends and comrades…it’s a community thing and that is cool.  Embracing other musicians and acknowledging that other people’s gifts are just that…gifts!…is cool and I really dig and respect that in other people…but for musical bits…Something Less (than Something More to You) with Lin Peterson on dobro (way to go Lin!).  Jesus…this song will make you rip your own heart out.  It’s so damn honest and I’ve song my own version of the same song in my head or on my couch with my guitar and my five chords…and not just once…and not too far long ago…shit…not even a week.  DAMNIT! But you have to appreciate the people that can speak so eloquently on your behalf…and use their instruments to do it.  Thank you for that.  That is why we see live music people!  Second highlight was Caitlin’s goose bump-inspiring version of Scott Philip’s Battleground Park and her diatribe on muscle-relaxers and social experiments.  All good stuff.  A great Sunday.

Check Out “Water Words That Work”

This is a great blog. It talks a lot about how our everyday shoptalk gets lost on the general public, and how a lot of our efforts to educate people about environmental issues get lost because we are so busy using over-the-top vocabulary. For instance, very few people understand what the word “watershed” means. And apparently people respond to the phrases “clean water” and “family activities” rather than “drinking water supply” and “recreation”. It’s worth reading if you are involved in any public outreach activities. I have learned so much and I evaluate all of our outreach materials in a completely new way now. Also…I have always been obsessed with using beautiful imagery of beautiful places because I thought it was important to have aesthetic appeal, but I’ve been noticing that pictures that show children playing in a river, for example, will be more effective in promoting river clean up and what not.

Lin turned me on to these guys and they rock. Seriously. They’re from Murfreesboro, TN and they are sort of this conglomeration of rock, indie, alt country, and americana…the sound that is being turned out a lot right now. i dig it. check em out. they also have a new album available for FREE download. usually when bands do that, there are only a few songs i dig and i download the whole thing, upload it to my ipod, then actually listen to it, then think about how i should go and filter out my ipod so i don’t have a whole album’s worth of music i don’t like and that annoys me on the shuffle mode, yet it seems way to daunting a task and i don’t do it and i’ve got 40 gb of shit i don’t like! but not so with these guys. the whole album is good. “blood on the knobs” kicks ass.
